Agriculture, Agroforestry, and Biodiversity: Mining and the Living Landscape
“Our goal is to protect artisanal mining practices while ensuring they are preserved, advanced, recognized, and provided with pathways to formalization and international market participation under fair and equitable terms.”
Sapphires extracted from Sri Lanka come from areas where MINING OPERATIONS and AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES frequently intersect, necessitating COLLABORATIVE APPROACHES to land stewardship. This is particularly significant for AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS—where tea, fruit, and additional crops flourish alongside INDIGENOUS TREE SPECIES, delivering consistent canopy coverage, enhancing soil quality, and supporting ECOLOGICAL DIVERSITY.
By adopting SUSTAINABLE MINING practices, initiating LAND RESTORATION projects, and enhancing regulatory frameworks, Sri Lanka can preserve its gemstone heritage while PROTECTING ITS ENVIRONMENT.
It is crucial to shift towards ECO-FRIENDLY MINING methods to safeguard the island's natural beauty and ensure a SUSTAINABLE FUTURE for both the gemstone industry and the ECOSYSTEM.
Artisanal Gem Extraction in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's gem mining heritage is anchored in time-honored artisanal techniques that have been transmitted across generations. The sector remains largely dependent on small-scale, hands-on operations, demonstrating a commitment to both cultural continuity and ecological responsibility.
Open Pit Extraction (Illam Mining)
“Open pit extraction, referred to locally as “illam mining,” represents the most common and time-honored approach employed in Sri Lanka's interior gem fields, especially throughout south central areas. This technique requires vertical excavation through successive layers of surface material to access the illam, a productive gem-containing layer made up of decomposed gravels, clay, sand, and organic matter, typically situated several feet beneath ground level.”
Riverbed Mining
“Riverbed mining represents a traditional approach employed across alluvial plains and riverine environments, especially when seasonal water reduction occurs. This methodology capitalizes on the natural accumulation of gemstones that have been conveyed and settled by water movement throughout extended historical periods.”
